This photo was taken in late winter this past year.  I love watching these gorgeous little nomads, they are so entertaining with their clownish antics.  I also love seeing their large flocks pass by overhead and listening to their high pitched whistling calls.  I'm looking forward to seeing them again this January when they seem to appear out of nowhere.

This photo was taken at the Calgary Zoo this past September.  It was an absolute joy to see this Black Swan.  I haven't seen one since I was a small child living in Germany many years ago.

Photo of the day-stowaway

This photo was taken on a Caribbean Cruise, on our cruise ship specifically, four years ago now.  I have a habit of waking early, usually between 4 and 5 am.  On the ship, in order not to wake my mother, I would grab a cup of coffee in the cafeteria and head out on deck to enjoy the solitude, listen to the water beneath the ship and watch the sun rise.  This bird startled me, just as I set my coffee on the floor beside one of the deck beds where I just sat down. 

You see it was sneaking around under the deck beds and making every attempt to hide.  It had clearly seen me before I saw it.  I had to sit very still to get this photo and I watched it for over an hour as it continued to try to hide, while more and more people rose to greet the day.  I do not know how long the bird stayed aboard, as I eventually went to go grab a coffee for my mother, and when I returned it had gone.   However, since it is not a bird that you see here in Alberta, I'm very glad that it stowed away aboard the cruise ship even for just a little while.

I took this photo in the summer of this year at the little pond near my work.  He or she surprised me, because when I arrived at the pond in the middle of the day, I startled it into flight unintentionally and I just assumed that I had lost any opportunity to get a photo.  Instead this beauty landed on the opposite side of the pond and stayed for quite some time, no doubt because there weren't any other people around.

I don't often see new butterflies, but this year I saw and photographed two to my absolute delight.
This White Admiral sailed by me on the forest path and I followed.  I was fortunate to get several images, however he or she wouldn't come down off his perch so I could have a closer look.  Perhaps next year.

This photo was taken several years ago, very late in the fall. I wasn't expecting to see much at the pond due to the lateness of the season, but this hawk flew right by me fearlessly to land on the metal fencing surrounding  the viewing platform.
