Wildlife photo- September

This is a thumb sized frog I discovered at a pond on the south-side of the city.  He was hiding in the short grass quite successfully until I nearly stepped on him as I was taking a photo of a bird in the pond.  He was as startled as I and froze.  I picked him up but he jumped out of my hand onto my camera bag, where he stayed long enough for me to get this photo.   I had to lie down on my belly to get it.  He is so cute, how could I resist?

This week in pictures

Well it is that time of year again and fall migration is well underway, while the leaves change color and the weather cools down somewhat.  Who knew time could move so quickly.  Those who love birds are out as often as time allows, trying to capture as many glimpses or photos of birds as possible.  Hopefully some of us will also discover a new bird or two to add to the life list.  The following photos represent just a few of the birds I have seen so far this season.

Acadian Flycatcher

Wildlife Portrait August

I was lucky enough to capture this humming bird in south Edmonton this week.  They will soon be migrating to the south.

Black-chinned Hummingbird
Since I sighted this tiny little Jewel of a bird, I have been seeing Humming birds everywhere. Including my neighbor's back yard.  Have you seen any humming birds lately?

Look what the wind delivered

It has been very windy of late.  The morning following the first truly windy day, I spotted this male Hooded Merganser at the pond near my work.

Hooded Merganser and Mallard ducks

The Merganser was extremely wary.  He is obviously not used to people.  I had to stand very still for short periods of time, before slowly inching closer, in order to get these photos.  At one point I even made myself smaller, by kneeling and bending very close to  the ground.

On the next windy day, which followed only twenty four hours after sighting the beautiful Hooded Merganser, I got off the bus in the afternoon, to be greeted by this gorgeous Monarch butterfly, practically at my front door.

I have never seen a Monarch butterfly here in Edmonton, or any other place that I have lived in Canada.  It is difficult to describe the delight and elation of seeing and capturing it's image and I shall treasure these photos.  Although I sincerely hope I will see the Monarch butterfly again.

Life has been turbulent, but I have managed to get out on occasion. Although my attempts to post regularly have so far been disrupted. I will keep trying. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the following photos.
